DESIGN VISION

The brief for Twineham Grange Farm was clear yet inspiring: to create six contemporary gardens that complement the new homes while harmonising with the rolling landscape of Sussex. The objective was to design multifunctional outdoor sanctuaries where residents could cook, dine, relax, and find moments of tranquillity. Privacy, seamless transitions, and cohesive flow between carefully designed zones were central to the vision.

The project also required strategic planning for communal access roads, bespoke lighting schemes, and thoughtful division of plots—elements that added complexity but also enhanced the opportunity for creativity.

PLANTING DESIGN & BIODIVERSITY

We view plants as the lifeblood of every landscape. From the outset, the team worked with trusted growers to source trees and plants that would not only enhance the visual appeal of the gardens but also thrive and promote biodiversity within the environment. The focus was on creating spaces that are both ecologically responsible and aesthetically stunning.

The site was meticulously prepared before planting began, following detailed plans to establish a cohesive design across all six plots. Hardy varieties like Dryopteris ferns, Helebores, Sarcococca, and Hakone grass were used to enhance shaded areas with texture and elegance. Vibrant drifts of Salvia and Verbena bonariensis, along with long-flowering perennials and winter seed heads, were selected to attract pollinators and maintain seasonal interest.

Structural plantings, including Amelanchier and Miscanthus grasses, brought sophistication and depth to the design, while Sesleria Autumnalis and Anemanthele Lessoniana grasses contributed naturalistic flow and movement. Native trees such as Betula utilis (Silver Birch), Betula nigra (River Birch), Fagus sylvatica (Beech), and Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) were incorporated to offer privacy, structure, and architectural interest, perfectly suited to the natural contours of the Sussex landscape. The resulting gardens are not only visually captivating but also sustainable and resilient, designed to evolve and flourish over time.

OVERCOMING DESIGN CHALLENGES

Every project presents challenges, and Twineham Grange Farm was no exception. The site’s undulating terrain required thoughtful design solutions to ensure cohesion across varied elevations, while budget considerations prompted innovative value engineering. Materials were carefully selected to achieve the desired aesthetic without compromising on quality or design integrity.

Collaboration with Bluestone Developments was instrumental throughout the process. Their openness to creative input and shared dedication to excellence enabled the team to overcome challenges with efficiency and grace, resulting in a finished product that remained true to the original vision.
